What is SIBO?
SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) is a condition where there is excessive growth of bacteria in the small intestine.
Normally, bacterial count in the small intestine is around 10,000–100,000 per 1 ml of intestinal fluid. When this number exceeds 100,000, it’s considered SIBO.
This bacterial overgrowth leads to fermentation of food and excessive gas production — hydrogen (SIBO) or methane (IMO).
Recent studies show that SIBO may be responsible for 60% to 80% of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) cases.

SIBO is diagnosed using hydrogen - methane breath test (with CO₂ correction). It is a simple, non-invasive, yet reliable diagnostic method.
Preparation for test
Proper preparation for the SIBO breath test is essential to ensure accurate results. Please follow the instructions provided to you in advance.
Inadequate preparation may result in need to cover the cost of testing materials.
Proceeding of test
Test measures levels of hydrogen and methane in exhaled air and takes approximately 3 hours to complete.
- It begins with collecting “baseline sample” — by exhaling into a special mouthpiece connected to collection bag.
- Syringe is then used to draw a sample of your exhaled air.
- You will then be asked to drink a solution containing 10g of lactulose.
- After 20 minutes, another breath sample is collected.
- This process is repeated every 20 minutes for the duration of the test.
- Contraindications: The test should not be performed if postprandial hypoglycemia is confirmed or suspected.
After test
Within 24 hours of completing the test, you will receive a report with detailed interpretation sent to your email.
- Report is prepared based on the latest global guidelines and enriched with insights from our clinical experience.
- However, the final interpretation of results should be done by your primary care physician, as SIBO and its related symptoms are often the result of other underlying health issues. These may include thyroid dysfunction, unstable blood sugar levels, infections or anatomical abnormalities.
